About St Lawrence, Little Stanmore
St Lawrence, Little Stanmore is an active Church of England parish church in Edgware, Greater London. This Grade I listed building is notable for its historic fabric and richly ornamented interior, whose Continental Baroque character is unusual among English churches.
The church has medieval origins, with its stone tower surviving from around 1360. Most of the present building dates from an early 18th-century Baroque reconstruction commissioned by James Brydges and led initially by John James, with possible later involvement from James Gibbs. Gibbs also designed the mausoleum added in 1735, which contains burials of the first and third Dukes of Chandos. Its features include painted decoration and a monument to the first duke with his first two wives. The historic organ incorporates elements modelled on the 1716 instrument and was reconstructed in 1994. Handel is believed to have played it, and his Chandos Anthems may first have been performed here.
