About St. Peter and St. Paul, Dagenham

St. Peter and St. Paul, Dagenham is an active Church of England parish church in Dagenham, Greater London. Also known locally as the parish church of Dagenham, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Sunday worship continues alongside gatherings held during the week.

Its origins date to the opening decades of the thirteenth century, when Barking Abbey provided the land. Kentish ragstone, carried over the Thames, formed the earliest structure. The northern chapel contains later medieval fabric, including late fifteenth-century arches connecting it with the chancel. In 1800, structural weakness caused the tower to fall, ruining both the nave and the aisle to its south. William Mason designed the subsequent reconstruction, finished in 1805 with salvaged stone and brown brick. A spire once crowned the replacement tower but was taken down in 1921. The bell ring, initially comprising six bells from 1804, was recast in 1933 and expanded to eight five years afterwards. An organ arrived in 1844.
