About St Mary's The Virgin (East Barnet Parish Church)
St Mary’s the Virgin, known as East Barnet Parish Church, serves the East Barnet parish in Greater London. This Church of England church stands at Church Hill and forms part of the Diocese of St Albans. It continues in parish use and holds Grade II* protection for its architectural and historic importance.
A chapel was established on the site in 1080 and consecrated by St Albans’ abbot. Medieval fabric remains in the northern wall, which was made using rubble bound with lime and covered in plaster. Some early glass also survives. Extensive nineteenth-century work created much of the church seen today, including the yellow-brick tower of 1828 in a Neo-Norman design. The building gained a southern aisle in 1868, while the sanctuary was lengthened in 1880 and provided with an east window and space for an organ. Its current organ was installed in 1920. Three replacement bells arrived in 1960, and damage sustained during the Second World War led to repairs to sections of the walls and roof.
