About Saint Mary's, Hadley

Saint Mary's, Hadley serves Monken Hadley as an active Church of England parish church in Barnet, Greater London, within the Diocese of London. Eucharistic worship and choral music remain central to its life. The building has held Grade II* status since 1949.

Christian worship is thought to have occupied the site for more than eight centuries. Although associated with an earlier foundation, the present Perpendicular building dates chiefly from a reconstruction completed in 1494, possibly following damage during the 1471 Battle of Barnet. Its western tower is built of flint with dressed stone at the corners and carries a historic copper warning beacon, repaired after a storm brought it down in 1779. G. E. Street undertook extensive alterations in 1848, followed by further Victorian work including stained glass, an organ and a vestry. Notable survivals include a late medieval font, historic brasses, the Wilbraham family monument by Nicholas Stone and nine bells, eight used for change ringing.
