About St John the Baptist Church
St John the Baptist Church serves Chipping Barnet as an active Anglican parish church. It stands at 2 Wood Street, close to the High Street and near the summit of Barnet Hill. Today it belongs to the Chipping Barnet Team Ministry and, unusually for an Anglican congregation in Greater London, comes under the Diocese of St Albans. The building has been protected at Grade II* since 1950.
A chapel was probably established on the site around 1250 and is documented by 1272. The present structure dates largely from a reconstruction commissioned by St Albans abbot John de la Moote around 1400. Its plan includes an aisled nave with grouped pillars and pointed openings, a chancel featuring a finely patterned Perpendicular east window, and a short square western tower crowned with battlements. William Butterfield directed extensive work in 1871 and 1872, including the relocation of Thomas Ravenscroft’s tomb. After fire damaged the choir vestry in 1974, changes completed in 1984 added glazed entrance doors, a replacement vestry and organ alterations.
