About St Margaret, Barking
St Margaret, Barking serves the Church of England community in Barking, Greater London. It remains in parish use and is dedicated to Saint Margaret of Antioch. Standing near the surviving fabric of Barking Abbey, an ancient royal religious house, the church has Grade I listed protection. Its worship reflects both open evangelical and Anglo-Catholic traditions.
The site’s Christian history reaches back to the early thirteenth century, when a chapel was provided for Barking residents inside the abbey precinct. The chancel, created under King John, forms the oldest surviving element, while the existing tower for the bells dates from the later fifteenth century. Parish life continued there following the monastery’s suppression. Interior memorials include a tribute to seventeenth-century statesman Charles Montagu. James Cook and Elizabeth Batts were married there in December 1762. Architects Charles Winmill and George Jack contributed to substantial internal conservation work carried out from 1929 until 1936.
