About St Erkenwald's Church, Barking

St Erkenwald’s Church, Barking, serves as an Anglican parish church in Barking, Greater London. It stands in Levett Road and belongs to the Church of England. Its dedication commemorates Earconwald, who was involved in establishing Barking Abbey and whose sister, Ethelburga, became the abbey’s inaugural abbess.

The congregation’s first building opened in 1934 as a provisional place of worship. In 1954, it gave way to the lasting red-brick structure used today. Funding for its construction included part of a wartime compensation award associated with Holy Trinity in Canning Town. That church had been lost during the bombing of London in the Second World War, and some of the resulting payment helped meet the cost of the replacement building at Barking.
