About Parish Church of St Mildred
The Parish Church of St Mildred serves the Church of England community in Tenterden, Kent. Named for Mildred, an Anglo-Saxon royal woman who became head of the religious house at Minster-in-Thanet, it is an active place of parish worship and has Grade I protection. Since 2016, it has belonged to a benefice uniting Tenterden and nearby parishes across Rother and Oxney.
The earliest building work took place during the twelfth century, with successive additions made over the following centuries. In 1461, prosperity generated by Tenterden’s wool industry helped finance the 39.6-metre tower. This structure incorporates Bethersden Marble, a shell-rich form of limestone. Stained glass appears around the sanctuary and in windows lining the church, while marble columns support the nave’s arcades. Later alterations replaced timber pews with chairs, added glazed entrance doors and renewed the internal paintwork. The burial ground is situated alongside the building.
