About Holy Trinity Church, Halstead
Holy Trinity Church, Halstead stands near the meeting of Trinity Street and Chapel Hill in Halstead, Essex. This former Anglican place of worship is Grade II* listed, has been redundant since 1987 and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
A medieval chapel occupied the site from around 1413 but was gone by the 1700s. George Gilbert Scott designed the present church, erected in 1843–44 with substantial support from Mary Gee and a £500 parliamentary grant. Its spire collapsed during construction, causing only slight injuries. An organ chamber followed in 1876. Faced in flint over brick, with pale brick and limestone detailing, the building reflects the Early English Gothic Revival. Its plan includes aisles, a clerestoried nave, chancel and tall four-stage tower crowned by a broach spire. Interior features include six-bay arcades, nineteenth-century stained glass and an organ dating from 1858 that underwent several later restorations.
