About Parish Church of St Mary Magdalen
The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalen stands in Great Chesterford, Essex, and serves as a Church of England parish church. Dating from the early Norman period, it has Grade I protection in recognition of its historic and architectural importance.
The church was constructed around the turn of the 12th century using flint and rubble, with dressings of Barnack stone. Much Norman work remains, including rounded arches, a clerestory and arcades whose columns incorporate reused Roman stonework. Medieval alterations included Gothic crossing arches, an enlarged central tower, a widened south aisle and a vaulted porch. A lead-covered spire was also added. Surviving features include 12th-century wall paintings, medieval glass, a Doom painting and an octagonal font. The chancel was rebuilt during the 15th century and again in the 1880s. Following damage by fire in 1979, the south transept roof was replaced, and cleaning revealed previously concealed medieval paintings. The tower contains a ring of eight bells installed in 1927.
