About Parish Church of St Mary and St John the Evangelist

The Parish Church of St Mary and St John the Evangelist serves Great Chesterford in Essex within the Church of England. It remains an active parish church and has Grade II* protection.

Worship on the site is recorded in 1092, when Picot of Cambridge gave the earlier church to the community subsequently called Barnwell Priory. The present medieval building uses flint and rubble and displays Early English architecture. The chancel and nave were constructed about 1200; a southern aisle and chapel followed in the fourteenth century. Thomas Skelton provided for the chapel in his will, and his memorial stands inside. A porch lies on the south side, while the tower at the western end carries a lead-clad spire. It also houses a clock and a pair of bells placed there in 1903. Remaining fabric spans the fifteenth through nineteenth centuries.
