About St. George's Chapel, Chatham
St. George’s Chapel, Chatham is in Gillingham, within the former Chatham Dockyard complex once known as HMS Pembroke. The Grade II listed building retains close links with the Royal Navy and now serves as a naval memorial centre under local authority management. It contains numerous commemorative windows and memorials to naval personnel, and Medway Council holds meetings there.
Construction began with a ceremonial stone-laying on 27 April 1905, and John Harmer, Bishop of Rochester, dedicated the completed church on 19 December 1906. Its design resembles that of the naval chapel at HMS Drake in Plymouth, now HMNB Devonport. A notable stained-glass window commemorates vessels based at Chatham that were lost during the Second World War. Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II, unveiled it on 29 October 1950.
