About Chapel Of The Immaculate Conception, Franciscan Convent
The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, Franciscan Convent is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Braintree, Essex, overseen by the Missionary Franciscan Sisters. The church has been protected at Grade II since 1973.
Westminster Cathedral architect John Francis Bentley drew up the design during 1898, and the chapel was finished the following May. Its asymmetrical complex uses red brick, stone trim and tiled roofing. The west-facing gable includes two narrow pointed windows and horizontal masonry detailing. An eight-sided tower rises from the south-west corner, with a bell chamber featuring decorative tracery, above which sit a masonry dome and finial. The entrance occupies a recessed central section behind a wall linking the tower to the gabled southern wing. A pair of pointed openings, separated by a single column, pierce this wall. Leaded glazing is fitted within metal-framed windows.
