About Hastings Unitarian Church
Hastings Unitarian Church is a Unitarian place of worship in Hastings, East Sussex, also known as the Unitarian and Free Christian Church. The building has remained in religious use since opening in 1868. It is officially registered both for worship and for marriages.
The congregation began in 1858, initially gathering in a music hall and later at the Swan Hotel. John Bowring established a permanent church in 1867, and George Beck designed the building, which opened the following year. Set within a terrace near Hastings railway station, it is a late Victorian example of Neoclassical chapel architecture, with painted rendered brickwork, a pedimented front, tall round-headed windows and narrowing pilasters. Inside are blank-arched arcades, a carved timber and cast-iron pulpit, and Corinthian cast-iron columns supporting the gallery. Its organ, made by Snetzler around 1760, arrived in 1930 after serving three other Unitarian congregations. It was restored in 1995 and repaired again in 2010.
