About Church of St Andrew
The Church of St Andrew serves the Church of England parish in Kirby Grindalythe, East Riding of Yorkshire. It is recognised as a Grade II* listed building, a designation granted in 1966.
The site has held a church since the 12th century. Masonry in the nave and the lower section of the west tower remain from that period, while the tower’s upper stages date from the 14th century. G. E. Street rebuilt most of the church from 1872 to 1875. Constructed in sandstone beneath a tiled roof, it includes a clerestoried nave, north aisle, chancel, chapel, vestry and south porch. Inside are Norman sedilia, a medieval arcaded tomb, stained glass mainly by Clayton and Bell, and a large Ascension mosaic by an unidentified Italian artist. After falling stonework forced a temporary closure in the 2000s, a £500,000 restoration was undertaken, largely funded by English Heritage.
