About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is a Church of England place of worship in Cottam, East Riding of Yorkshire. Designated Grade II in 1966, it remained in use for monthly services in 2026, although substantial repairs were needed. Entry is through a working farm, and the church faced possible closure in 2017.
Originating in the 12th century, the church underwent extensive rebuilding in 1852 as part of works financed by Tatton Sykes. His daughter, Mary Sykes, provided the design. A medieval wall-painting fragment found in 2004 showed that older fabric had survived the Victorian alterations. Built from sandstone and roofed in Welsh slate, the structure comprises a nave, south porch, chancel and northern vestry. Its west front has corner buttresses, a lancet, quatrefoil and gabled bellcote topped by a cross. Inside are a carved Norman tub font and a marble memorial tablet by Francis Leggatt Chantrey.
