About Church of St Michael

The Church of St Michael is a Church of England parish church in Bempton, within the Bridlington area of the East Riding of Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade II* listed status since 1966.

Its earliest surviving fabric is found in the nave arcades, dating to about 1200, while the western tower was constructed during the 14th century. The chancel was reconstructed in 1829, followed later that century by the addition of the southern porch. Substantial restoration took place in 1870 and again in 1906. Stone is the principal building material, although the chancel is brick with some pebbledash, beneath slate roofing. The octagonal upper section of the tower rises above two square stages and is finished with a battlemented parapet. Inside are a font from the early 1200s and a wooden chancel screen thought to date from 1829. Of the church’s pair of bells, one was made around 1361.
