About Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin serves Pilton, a suburb of Barnstaple in Devon. This active Church of England parish church belongs to the Diocese of Exeter and has held Grade I listed status since 1951.
Its origins lie in Pilton Priory, a Benedictine house established between 925 and 940 under Malmesbury Abbey. The present church combines work from the 13th and 15th centuries, with its dedication recorded in 1259. Local slatestone in purple, grey and brown tones is complemented by sandstone details and slate roofing. After Civil War damage, Robert Nutting rebuilt the tower in 1696, while further work followed between 1845 and 1850. Surviving features include traces of medieval stained glass, a stone pulpit dating from about 1550, an Elizabethan communion rail and an eight-bell peal, some bells dating to 1712. Notable memorials commemorate members of the Chichester family.
