About Church of Saints Peter and Paul
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is an active Church of England parish church in Barnstaple, Devon, within the Diocese of Exeter. It is recognised as a Grade II* listed building and retains evidence of several periods in the town’s history.
A church may have occupied the site by the tenth century, while the earliest stone structure was probably built during the thirteenth century. Surviving medieval fabric includes sections of the chancel and tower. Following the Dissolution, former chantry chapels were adapted as aisles, changing the earlier cross-shaped plan into a rectangular one; these aisles were reconstructed around 1670. The lead-clad spire also dates from the later seventeenth century. Victorian restoration was undertaken by George Gilbert Scott and subsequently John Oldrid Scott. Notable fittings include a ceremonial mayoral pew, numerous memorials to seventeenth-century merchants, and a large organ made by John Crang in 1764.
