About Holy Trinity Church, Barnstaple
Holy Trinity Church, Barnstaple is an active Church of England parish church in Barnstaple, Devon, within the Diocese of Exeter. It has held Grade II* listed status since 1981. Its prominent 38-metre tower is a familiar landmark across the town and nearby area.
The tower was erected between 1843 and 1845 for an earlier church by Exeter architect David Mackintosh. Unsound foundations led to the replacement of the main building in 1867, designed by William White. The four-level Somerset-style tower has recessed buttresses, a battlemented parapet and decorated pinnacles. Rubble masonry with dressed ashlar is used for the tower, while the remainder combines coursed stone with ashlar and Bath stone details beneath slate roofing. Inside are a nave of four bays, aisles and a chancel. A First World War memorial stands near the western entrance. Reordering and tower repairs were completed in 2009.
