About St Laurence's

St Laurence's serves the Foleshill parish of Coventry within the Church of England. It stands beside Old Church Road, on the north-eastern side of the city centre, and continues in use as a parish church. Its architectural and historic importance is recognised through Grade II* protection.

The site may have begun with a modest chapel funded by Lady Godiva. Around 1150, that Anglo-Saxon building was succeeded by a sandstone church. Its tower dates from the fifteenth century, while the northern aisle followed in the sixteenth. A brick chancel was built in 1782 in place of its Norman sandstone predecessor, and its Palladian-style window later made way for a rose window of coloured glass. Nineteenth-century changes included the southern aisle and a vestry, with a transept and choir vestry added during the twentieth century. Wartime firebomb damage required substantial repair. Surviving fittings include a twelfth-century font, an iron-reinforced chest from the sixteenth century and three bells made by Hugh Watts of Leicester.
