About St Luke's Church
St Luke’s Church, on Rotherham Road in the Holbrooks district of Coventry, is an active Church of England parish church. Its worship reflects the denomination’s traditional Catholic practice, and episcopal care is provided through the Bishop of Oswestry.
Its origins date to 1916, when a simple block-built chapel was established as an outreach of St Paul’s in Foleshill. Holbrooks gained its own parish in 1935. Nugent Cachemaille-Day designed the current red-brick building, which was finished in 1939 with distinctive concrete-framed glazing, plus a pulpit and altar outside. Air raids during the Coventry Blitz made it unusable within months of dedication. Repairs undertaken in subsequent years reinstated the original design. A community centre was constructed beside it during the 1960s. Later interior work made the sanctuary more open, increased natural light and gave worshippers clearer views. In 2007, a substantial renovation introduced modern heating and padded seating.
