About St Meugan's Church
St Meugan’s Church is an active Anglican parish church about 1.5 kilometres east of central Ruthin, Denbighshire. Dedicated to the fifth- or sixth-century Welsh saint Meugan, it served as Ruthin’s first parish church before St Peter’s assumed that role nearer the town centre. Services are still held occasionally within the Diocese of St Asaph. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The present structure originated in the thirteenth century, with 1254 given as its building date, and was extended during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Henry Kennedy restored it in 1852. Limestone and sandstone walls support a Welsh slate covering, while the nave and chancel form one continuous interior beneath a seven-bay timber roof. Notable survivals include a richly carved rood screen, a west gallery dated 1721, an ornate seventeenth-century altar table and funerary memorials spanning several centuries. A south porch and bellcote complete the building.
