About St Cynhafal's Church
St Cynhafal’s Church stands in a secluded spot near Llangynhafal, within the Ruthin area of Denbighshire. It honours Cynhafal, a monk from the seventh century, and no other British church shares this dedication. Still serving as a parish church in St Asaph Diocese, it hosts services from time to time and holds Grade I listed status.
The site has older roots, while the surviving structure originated in the thirteenth century and underwent extensive rebuilding in the fifteenth. Further work took place during the mid-1800s, costing £1,400. Limestone walls support a roof covered with Welsh slate, and the layout comprises twin naves alongside a porch on the south side and a bellcote. A carved altarpiece depicting a pelican is among the interior features. Nearby Plas-yn-llan, formerly the rectory, was Robert Jones’s birthplace and received William Wordsworth as a guest during the 1790s.
