About St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church is a Church of England church in Ruthin, Denbighshire. Now closed for regular worship, it has been cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches since the early 2000s. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building, chiefly for its well-preserved medieval character and rare rood screen with its loft still intact.

The present structure is believed to have thirteenth-century origins, with later alterations made over several centuries. Local gritstone forms the main walls, while the south porch is built of shale and the roof is covered with slate. Medieval survivals include the Perpendicular east window, timber roof and carved rood screen. A dated bellcote was added in 1688, and its single bell was cast in 1751. Henry Kennedy oversaw restoration work in 1857, when the western gallery was removed. The churchyard contains a fifteenth-century Gothic cross, separately designated Grade II* and protected as a scheduled monument.
