About St Marcella's Church
St Marcella’s Church is a Church of England parish church on Whitchurch Road, roughly a mile south-east of central Denbigh in Denbighshire. Dedicated to the early Welsh saint Marcella, or Marchell, it was Denbigh’s first parish church before St Hilary’s Chapel assumed that role during the 19th century. The church remains active within the Diocese of St Asaph, with services held occasionally, and is protected at Grade I.
Its origins belong to the period around 1290, when Denbigh and its castle were being established under Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln. Few parts of that initial building survive, as the structure was largely reconstructed around 1500 and later restored in both the 19th and 20th centuries. Built from sandstone in several tones and roofed with Welsh slate, it has two parallel naves, a western tower and a porch on the south side. Inside are a richly decorated hammerbeam roof and funerary monuments from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
