About St Peter's Cathedral
St Peter’s Cathedral is a Roman Catholic place of worship at St. Peters Square North in Belfast, County Antrim. It is the principal church of Down and Connor diocese and the bishop is based there. Although long regarded as a temporary diocesan cathedral, it officially gained cathedral rank in 1986. Worship continues regularly, including daily Mass, and the church has Grade A listed protection.
Planned for Belfast’s increasing Catholic community following the Famine, the present building dates from the 1860s and welcomed its first congregation in 1866. The site came from flour merchant and charitable donor Bernard Hughes, while the plans were prepared by priest and trained architect Jeremiah Ryan McAuley. Scrabo sandstone, chiefly grey in colour, was used for much of the structure. Two spires were completed in 1886. Within, seven-arched openings separate the nave and aisle, beneath a richly coloured timber roof of hammer-beam construction. Renovation in 2003–05 introduced limestone furnishings carved by Ken Thompson, including the altar, ambo and font.
