About Clonard Monastery
Clonard Monastery is a Roman Catholic church near the Falls Road in Belfast, County Antrim, and remains home to a Redemptorist community. It is protected as a Grade B1 listed building. The church holds an annual novena dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, attended by Catholic and Protestant pilgrims from across Ireland. It has also played a significant part in local peace and reconciliation work.
The Redemptorists came to Belfast in 1896 after being invited by Henry Henry, Bishop of Down and Connor, to support the city’s growing Catholic population. A modest church made from corrugated metal was erected at Clonard House the next year, while a community residence in an early French Gothic style had opened nearby. The Church of the Holy Redeemer replaced the temporary structure in 1911. A restoration programme costing £3 million began in 2008 and concluded four years later.
