About Holy Cross Church

Holy Cross Church is a Roman Catholic church on Crumlin Road, where it meets Woodvale Road in Ardoyne, Belfast. Built in 1919, it is recognised as a Grade B+ listed building. The church is constructed from sandstone and designed in the Lombardic Romanesque style.

The parish began after Bishop Patrick Dorrian of Down and Connor invited the Passionists to Ardoyne in 1868. Fathers Raphael and Alphonsus, together with Brother Luke, built the first small church on the site, which opened in 1869. A retreat house and monastery followed, with the adjoining monastery designed by the Dublin architects O’Neill & Byrne and erected between 1877 and 1881. By 1890, the earlier church walls had become structurally unsafe. Although restoration began, the growing local population led to the decision to replace that building with a larger church.
