About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is an active Roman Catholic parish church on Chapel Lane, in the Smithfield district of Belfast. Recognised as a Grade B1 listed building, it has played a longstanding role in Catholic life in the city. Its garden also contains a Lourdes grotto, added in 1954.
The site first welcomed worshippers in 1784, following financial support from nearby Presbyterian and Church of Ireland communities. It was then Belfast’s sole Catholic place of worship. Population growth later made the original chapel inadequate, and John O’Neill prepared a Romanesque scheme that amounted to a substantial reconstruction, finished in 1868. The resulting structure featured a gabled frontage of red brick, an apse behind the altar, a porch, five extra bays and a bell tower rising 90 feet. Padraig Gregory oversaw alterations from the late 1930s, when the tower was taken down and new confessionals, stairs and a sacristy were installed. Later projects included sanctuary changes in 1983 and structural repairs in 2017.
