About St German's Priory

St German's Priory is a Church of England church in the Saltash area of Cornwall. Formerly an Augustinian religious house, it now serves as the active parish church of St Germans. The building forms part of the historic Port Eliot complex and is protected as a Grade I listed structure.

Built in the 12th century, around 1150, the church is chiefly Norman, with additions from the 14th and 15th centuries and Victorian alterations. Its walls combine local slatestone with sandstone and greenstone details beneath slate roofing. The striking western façade has an elaborately decorated Norman entrance flanked by two towers, one square and the other becoming octagonal above. Inside are medieval fittings, monuments to the Eliot family and stained glass designed by Edward Burne-Jones. Eight bells hang in the church. After the monasteries were dissolved, the original chancel was abandoned and later collapsed, leaving the former priory nave as the principal surviving space.
