About Wesleyan Methodist Church And Attached Church Hall
Wesleyan Methodist Church And Attached Church Hall stands in central Newquay, Cornwall. Formerly a Wesleyan place of worship, it is now home to Wave House Church, an evangelical congregation within the Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance. The church received Grade II listed status in 1988 and remains in religious and community use.
Methodist activity in Newquay dates from 1802, with a purpose-built chapel opening in Crantock Street in 1833. Following a Methodist division in 1852, a separate congregation worshipped at Wesley Hill. Its later growth led to the construction of the present East Street church in 1904, to designs by Bell, Withers and Meredith. Plymouth limestone faces the principal elevations, while St Columb stone covers the rear and side walls, complemented by Penryn granite detailing. The adjoining hall was created for Sunday school use. Elim Pentecostal Church acquired the property in 2009 and refurbished its interior for worship and community activities while preserving its historic character.
