About St Columb Minor Church
St Columb Minor Church is a Church of England parish church in Newquay, Cornwall, within the Diocese of Truro. Dedicated to Columba of Cornwall, it remains an active place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Christian use of the site may pre-date the Norman church built around 1100. A replacement followed in the mid-12th century, while much of the present structure developed during the 15th century. The chancel was rebuilt after being found in poor condition in 1417, and the nave arcades were renewed around 1430 using Beer stone and Cornish granite. The aisles were later extended alongside the chancel. Notable features include a Penventon stone font dating from about 1450, a porch with stone seating, and a 115-foot tower, among Cornwall’s tallest. Restoration in 1886 revealed stone piscinas associated with former altars, while surviving fragments recall the carved screen and seating removed in 1795.
