About Newquay Baptist Church
Newquay Baptist Church is a Reformed Baptist and Evangelical congregation in Newquay, Cornwall. Its chapel stands on Chapel Hill, near the lower end of Broad Street, with views towards Manor Road. Founded as Ebenezer Baptist Chapel, it adopted its present directory name in 1997, although the congregation voted in January 2023 to restore the historic name.
The Baptist community first worshipped in a former malthouse on Beach Road before constructing a thatched chapel in 1822. The thatch was later replaced with local slate quarried near Glendorgal Point. As the building became too small and required replacement, it was demolished and a larger chapel seating 200 opened in August 1870. The new baptistry allowed immersion baptisms to take place inside rather than in Newquay harbour or on the beach. A schoolroom and an upper vestry for the minister were subsequently added.
