About Church of St James
The Church of St James is a Church of England parish church in Kilkhampton, Cornwall. Dedicated to St James the Great, it remains an important historic place of worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1961.
Founded around 1150, the church retains a Romanesque inner doorway on its southern side. Most of the structure was reconstructed in the Perpendicular style during the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, including the nave, aisles, timber roofs, vestry and tall battlemented western tower. Slatestone masonry, granite details and slate roofing form its principal fabric. The porch was added in 1567 for John Grenville, while Sir George Gilbert Scott rebuilt the eastern end in 1860. Inside are 157 carved bench ends from the sixteenth century, an inscribed octagonal granite font, Victorian glass largely made by Clayton and Bell, several wall memorials and an organ containing nineteenth-century pipes.
