About St Nonna's Church, Altarnun
St Nonna’s Church stands in the Cornish village of Altarnun on Bodmin Moor and is sometimes called the Cathedral of the Moors. Dedicated to St Nonna, mother of St David, it remains an active Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Truro. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building and shares a benefice with the parish churches at Laneast and St Clether.
Founded around 1150, the church retains Norman fabric, including a notable font, although much of the present Perpendicular building dates from the late 1400s, when both aisles were added. Its tower rises to 109 feet. Historic woodwork includes an elaborately carved medieval screen, 79 bench ends made by Robert Daye during the early 16th century, and communion rails from 1684. E. Sedding undertook a restoration in 1867. The tower contains eight bells, while the churchyard includes one of several ancient stone crosses recorded in the parish.
