About Altarnun Methodist Chapel
Altarnun Methodist Chapel stands in Altarnun, Cornwall. Completed in 1859 as a Wesleyan place of worship, it is now in private ownership. The chapel was designated a Grade II listed building in 1988.
Rectangular in plan, the building uses locally quarried slatestone laid in regular courses, with granite detailing, a shaped plinth and a gabled slate roof. Two projecting entrance porches have sloping roofs and nineteenth-century doors beneath four-centred granite arches. A relief of John Wesley above the doorway was carved by Neville Northey Burnard when he was 16. Historic interior features included box pews, a Victorian Gothic organ case and a nineteenth-century rostrum backed by a shallow inscribed recess. A later partition divided the nave during the twentieth century.
