About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is an active Anglican parish church in Llanrwst, Conwy. It is designated Grade II* for its architectural and historic interest.
Designed by Paley and Austin following a competition, the church was erected from 1870 to 1873, replacing a medieval building dedicated to Saint Michael. Its crossing tower was finished in 1907. Built of rubble masonry with sandstone details and slate roofing, it has a cruciform plan and Transitional Norman character. Notable elements include lancet openings, a tracery rose window and a five-light east window. Inside are pointed arcades, a marble font, sandstone pulpit and Arts and Crafts choir furnishings. An Italian alabaster reredos dating from 1929 portrays Christ’s Passion. Much of the stained glass is by Shrigley and Hunt, while the organ originated with Gray and Davison in 1870 and was later enlarged and rebuilt.
