About St Doged's Church
St Doged’s Church is a Church of England church in Llanddoged, near Llanrwst in Conwy, Wales. This medieval place of worship has Grade II* listed status. It stands within an elevated circular churchyard, on the site of an ancient burial mound that predates Christianity.
A church dedicated to Saint Doged was established here in the sixth century, reportedly over the saint’s grave, and the site was recorded for taxation in 1291. The surviving building dates from the later medieval period and has two naves, with several arched windows from the sixteenth century. Rebuilding took place during the 1830s, when distinctive box-style pews were introduced. Such seating is more commonly associated with Nonconformist chapels than Anglican churches. Tiered seats at the west end retain labels for boys and girls, while the octagonal pulpit is nineteenth-century. Ffynnon Ddoged, a well bearing the saint’s name, lies about 50 metres north of the church.
