About Tabernacle Chapel

Tabernacle Chapel is a church in Roath, Cardiff. Built in 1910 for a Congregational congregation, it is now home to an independent evangelical fellowship and holds services in Welsh and English. The church has been protected at Grade II since 1999, with its historic interior and original features contributing to its architectural significance.

The congregation began in 1897, initially worshipping in a temporary corrugated-iron building on Mackintosh Place. Its permanent home, designed by Habershon, Fawkner & Company, opened in 1910 and soon accommodated a growing membership. A dedicated hall replaced the earlier structure in 1927. Bombing during the Second World War led to repairs completed in 1950, when the tower’s pinnacles were removed. Inside, notable elements include the ceiling and roof trusses, columns with Gothic-style bracing, graceful gallery fronts and surviving fittings. After closure in 2008, the building was acquired by its present congregation, and worship resumed in March 2009.
