About St Mary's Church, Luton
St Mary’s Church, Luton is an active Church of England parish church in central Luton, Bedfordshire, within the Diocese of St Albans. This Grade I listed building is the only church in Luton with that designation and is among Bedfordshire’s largest medieval churches. It follows the Open Evangelical tradition and has supported youth work and peace and reconciliation initiatives.
Worship on the site dates back more than a millennium, with an early church established around AD 930. The present building originated in 1121 and was consecrated in 1137, before being enlarged substantially during later medieval centuries. Its cruciform plan includes aisles, transepts and several chapels, while the exterior is distinguished by a chequered pattern of flint and stone. Features include the Wenlock and Hoo chapels, Rotheram family memorials, an octagonal carved stone font canopy and the Magnificat Window of 1979. The tower was repaired in 1906, and its clock returned to service in 1999.
