About Church of St. Nicholas
The Church of St. Nicholas is an active Church of England parish church on Summer Road in Thames Ditton, Surrey. Its origins predate the directory’s recorded building date of 1250, with surviving masonry attributed to the twelfth century. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Constructed chiefly from flint with stone detailing, the building also incorporates brick, weatherboarding and roofs of tile and slate. Norman fabric survives in the chancel’s northern wall and the low, broad tower, while later work includes a fourteenth-century chapel, a fifteenth-century aisle and nineteenth-century extensions. Notable furnishings include a sculpted Norman font dating from about 1120 and a contemporary stone piscina. Painted panels showing the Last Judgement, created around 1570, hang over the chancel arch. The church also contains the Forde memorial and brasses, stained glass depicting St Nicholas, and six bells recast in 1962 and rehung in 1981.
