About St Nicholas

St Nicholas is an active Church of England parish church in Shepperton, Surrey, standing in Church Square near the northern bank of the Thames. It belongs to the Diocese of London and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

Christian worship may have taken place on this site from the seventh century. A priest was recorded in Shepperton by 1087, while the earliest known mention of a church dates to 1157. After flooding destroyed an earlier structure, the church was largely rebuilt in 1614 using stone and flint, although parts of the fabric may survive from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. A brick bell tower followed around 1710 and contains a clock dating from 1769. Its six bells include five cast by John Warner & Sons in 1877 and a treble made at Whitechapel in 1979. Recent work has included restoration of the south transept during the 2010s and reconstruction of the tower’s upper section in 2024.
