About Gildersome Baptist Church
Gildersome Baptist Church is an active congregation in Gildersome, Leeds, West Yorkshire. It is among the longest-established churches in the Gildersome and Morley district, marking three centuries of preaching in 2007. The church is led in preaching by the Reverend David Newton and supports community events and educational activities, including courses and practical projects for young people.
The first chapel opened in 1707 and still survives. As the congregation needed more suitable premises, a larger chapel was erected for about £2,000 and opened on 2 May 1866. Later redevelopment retained this Victorian building while substantially modernising its interior. The balcony and upper auditorium were closed off, and the ground floor was adapted for contemporary use. Former adjoining church rooms became flats, while the graveyard was regenerated with grants and volunteer support to provide an outdoor learning space for local schools.
