About Church of St Mary In The Wood (Congregational)
Church of St Mary In The Wood is a Congregational place of worship in Morley, within Leeds, West Yorkshire. Its United Reformed congregation remains active, gathering in the Wesley Room at Central Methodist Church in Morley. The historic church structure is Grade II listed, though much of it was lost to fire in 2010. The former Sunday School accommodated services from 2008 until its purchase by Leeds City Council in 2023.
Christian worship on the original site can be traced to the Domesday era. Remains of a chapel dating from the 1200s were still incorporated into the earlier building during the 1830s. Following extensive alterations in the 1860s, increased attendance led to its demolition in 1875. A replacement by architects Lockwood and Mawson was completed between 1876 and 1878 for £7,000. After being sold to a developer in 2008, it became derelict; the later blaze left the spire and damaged masonry standing. Listed memorials in the burial ground include seventeenth- and eighteenth-century tombs and the Scatcherd Mausoleum.
