About St Marys Norton Cuckney
St Marys Norton Cuckney is a Church of England parish church in Cuckney, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Dating from the medieval period, it remains a parish church and is protected as a Grade I listed building. The remains of Cuckney Castle stand beside the churchyard and are designated as a Scheduled Monument.
Built around 1150, the church has undergone several periods of restoration, including work in 1667, 1892 and 1907. A weathered black marble slab set into the nave floor is traditionally believed to mark the burial place of Robert Pierrepont, first Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull, who died in about 1643. The church also houses a pipe organ made by Brindley & Foster in 1877. It shares a parish with St Winifred’s Church in Holbeck and Welbeck College Chapel.
