About St Michael and All Angels Church, Shelf, West Yorkshire
St Michael and All Angels Church is a Church of England parish church in Shelf, Bradford, West Yorkshire. Dedicated to Saint Michael, it shares the parish of Shelf with Buttershaw with St Aidan’s Church following the union of the two parishes in 1994. Worship takes place both on Sundays and during the week.
John Hardy, a major shareholder in the Low Moor Ironworks, provided the endowment, and the church was consecrated on 14 June 1850. James Mallinson and Thomas Healey designed the building, which has a porch on its northern side and a turret housing two bells. Robert Mawer’s decorative stonework includes carved faces above windows and an external arch, angels beneath the roof timbers, and leafy capitals at the chancel arch. Angels and inscriptions also ornament the font. An organ arrived in 1858, with a dedicated chamber added in 1880, while the church itself was enlarged in 1984.
