About Bradford Cathedral Church of St Peter

Bradford Cathedral Church of St Peter is a Church of England cathedral in Bradford, West Yorkshire. It shares equal status within the Diocese of Leeds with the cathedrals at Ripon and Wakefield. Formerly Bradford’s parish church, it became a cathedral in 1919 and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Christian worship on the site dates back to the seventh century. An early Saxon church was succeeded by a building erected around 1200, much of which was destroyed by Scottish raiders in about 1327. Reconstruction continued during the following century and was finished in 1458, with the Perpendicular west tower completed in 1508. Edward Maufe enlarged the cathedral during the 1950s and 1960s, creating its eastern extension and western wings. Notable features include Morris & Co. glass reused from an earlier window, other Victorian glazing, a 1921 war memorial window and wall monuments including work by John Flaxman.
