About Worthing Tabernacle
Worthing Tabernacle is an independent Evangelical church at 64 Chapel Road, Worthing, West Sussex. The congregation continues to use the chapel for Sunday services, other gatherings and community activities, with additional worship groups meeting in local homes. Its 1908 building is protected at Grade II, recognising its historic and architectural significance.
Founded by C. Douglas Crouch in 1895, the congregation first gathered at Montague Hall before relocating to Chapel Road. James Lund designed the new chapel, which was registered for services and marriages in 1908. Its design draws on Romanesque and Gothic Revival architecture, with a light-coloured stone frontage, brick walls elsewhere and slate roofing. The façade centres on a twelve-petalled circular window. Within, ornamented iron supports rise through timber galleries to carry the roof. Early fittings remain, including pews, carved gallery woodwork and a richly detailed pulpit arranged across two levels. A modern instrument and casing have replaced the original organ.
