About St Mary's
St Mary’s is a Church of England parish church serving Sompting, situated on Church Lane in Lancing, West Sussex. This active place of worship is recognised as a Grade I listed building for its exceptional architectural and historic importance.
A church existed here in the early 11th century, and parts of that building survive. The flint structure has Caen stone detailing and a slate roof. Its most distinctive feature is the late Saxon tower, which contains reused Roman brick and is crowned by a rare Rhenish helm formed from four steep, shingled gables. During the 12th century, the Knights Templar widened the nave and chancel and added chapels and transepts. Further alterations followed under the Knights Hospitaller. After deterioration in the 18th century, repairs were undertaken, followed by a substantial restoration in 1853 that included new roofing, renewed shingles and the conversion of the Templar chapel into the south transept.
